5 Tirolean Glaciers: Early snowfall kick-starts extra long ski season

Last updated on 23.09.2024

Tirol’s five glacier ski resorts are ready for what is surely the longest ski season in the Alps, stretching all the way from autumn until spring. Thanks to the early snowfall this year almost all of the five resorts are already open for business, while the accommodation providers in the nearby villages are reporting good booking numbers.

Snowsure pistes thanks to high altitude

The past winter season was a great success for Tirol, with 5.97 million arrivals and 26 million overnight stays, underpinning its dominance in winter sports. In addition, the forecast of the Tirolean Tourism Board already shows a good occupancy rate at the level of the previous winter. The region’s five glaciers ski resorts, the highest ski areas in Austria, offer guaranteed snow from autumn until spring.

The resorts of Sölden (since 20 September 2024), Hintertux Glacier (since 18 September 2024) and Stubai Glacier (since 20 September 2024) are currently open. They will soon be joined by the Pitztal Glacier (28 September 2024) and the Kaunertal Glacier (4 October 2024). During the main season they will offer over 300 kilometres of pistes at over 3,000 metres as well as 75 state-of-the-art cable cars and lifts. The early snowfall in September promises a fantastic start to the new season.

White5, Snow Card Tirol and glacier deals – the ingredients for a great winter

Skiers who want to ski hard all winter on Tirol’s glacier ski resorts should purchase the White5 Skipass which is valid for Sölden, Kaunertal Glacier, Pitztal Glacier, Stubai Glacier and Hintertux Glacier. It costs 610 Euro and can be used on any ten days of your choosing between 1 October 2024 and 15 May 2025. Those who want to explore even more resorts should get hold of the Snow Card Tirol which gives access to over 90 ski resorts including Tirol’s five glacier ski resorts. The Snow Card Tirol will be available this year for the first time at a special early-bird discount price (28 September until 31 October 2024) of 989 Euro. The card can be used from 1 October 2024.

There are also special accommodation and ski pass deals available for Tirol’s glacier ski resorts.

Arrival & travel – go green with public transport to and from the slopes

The excellent railway connections to and from Tirol as well as the extensive public transport network within the region make it easy to enjoy a car-free holiday. There is a special sleeper train called Nightjet to the snow bringing passengers from Vienna, Graz, Hamburg, Düsseldorf and Amsterdam to the Stubai Glacier and the Zillertal Valley. The ski pass (3 to 6 days) is included in the price of the ticket.

Within the resorts and villages there is an excellent network of public transport. All of the glacier ski resorts in Tirol are served by public buses, which can be used free of charge by anyone with a ski pass or guestcard.
