A summer full of cultural events in the Innsbruck region

Pop-up concerts, festivals and open-air presentations of early music, electronic sounds, performance art and theatrical art: the stage is truly set for the Innsbruck region’s Summer of Culture! The numerous events offer special highlights for every taste, on sunny afternoons or on balmy summer evenings.

INNSBRUCK INTERNATIONAL. Biennial of the Arts
7–22 May 2022 | Innsbruck

Innsbruck International is a biennial of contemporary art that is celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2022 and is this year dedicated to the theme of the Cookie. It is all about those who have created digital twins of themselves in their home offices during the pandemic, then shared them with others. A special highlight of this year’s Biennale is GGGNHM by God’s Entertainment, with this light sculpture from the Guggenheim Museum to be placed on Innsbruck’s Marktplatz square. For its anniversary year the Innsbruck International Biennale will once again be welcoming a wide range of national and international artists who will set the scene in the city.

Innsbruck Festival of Journalism
13–15 May 2022 | Innsbruck

More than 100 contributors from 20 countries are expected at the three-day “Innsbruck Festival of Journalism – International Days of Information”, to run from 13 to 15 May 2022. Distinguished journalists will discuss contemporary topics along with scientists, representatives of NGOs and experts from different regions of Europe and the world. For three days, the city will be an open forum for debating internationally pressing issues and crisis regions. There will be numerous discussions, book presentations, exhibitions of comics and photo reportages, documentary films and audio features. The festival is aimed at an interested public. Admission is free of charge for most of the 40 events.

Music in the Giant
19–21 May 2022 | Swarovski Crystal Worlds, Wattens

From 19 to 21 May 2022, “Music in the Giant” offers all the diversity of chamber music. This festival in Wattens is dedicated to the string quartet in its various forms, also paying tribute to the art of song and giving space to the piano as a solo and an accompanying instrument. Once again, internationally renowned soloists and top-class ensembles from the field of classical music will be on stage: renowned virtuosos such as the pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard and the Belcea Quartet, young stars such as the baritone André Schuen, the composer and musician Caroline Shaw and the Attacca Quartet from New York, not to mention the newcomers Quartissimo from Tyrol. Audiences can once again enjoy music of great quality and variety.

LUNAR LANDING
26–28 May 2022 | Innsbruck/Olympiaworld

From house to techno – LUNAR LANDING opens the festival season with a full spectrum of electronic dance music. Taking place for the first time this year, this new electronic festival will be partying to the max on the indoor and outdoor areas of the Olympiaworld Innsbruck. The line-up includes top-of-the-range acts from the EDM scene, with Lee Ann Roberts and Pretty Pink the two headliners for the second day of the festival. LUNAR LANDING aims to set new standards, in particular in terms of technology and sustainability, showing visitors the opportunities for the future. And the best way is at a good party!

Heart of Noise Music Festival

The Heart of Noise Music Festival focuses on young art and youth music culture, media art and digital art, VJ art and DJ culture – in other words, the musical and artistic cosmos unfolding around the new and ultra-new relevant cultural trends. As an experimental music and art festival, HON since 2011 has been getting people into the ideal mood for summer using sounds from the electronic music scene. This year too, the festival offers audiences four days of extraordinary musical experiences with a total of 34 programme items in 10 events at 4 venues. Klassik am Berg

A breathtaking concert in and for every sense: high in the midst of the natural alpine world, the Tyrolean chamber orchestra InnStrumenti invites you to its open-air summer concert “Klassik am Berg [Classical Music on the Mountain]”. At this unique concert, listeners enjoy musical pleasure at the highest level in the truest sense of the word. For all those who want to experience a classical concert hall located at an altitude of 1,965 metres above sea level – bring a folding chair or picnic blanket, then let the music play!

Pop-Up Concerts of Early Music
July and September 2022 | Innsbruck Old Town

The Pop-Up Concerts of Early Music prove that the repertoire contains wonderful compositions and highly varied works – neither old nor dusty. The concerts series was established in cooperation with Kufstein University of Applied Sciences, Tyrol together with Innsbruck Tourism, and is organised as part of a practical project by students on the “Sports, Culture & Event Management” Master’s programme. A range of public spaces in Innsbruck’s old town will act as venues for the free pop-up concerts, held at 11 am each Friday in July and September. This fourth edition will once more make early music accessible to a wide audience.

Katie Mahan – Piano Passion on the Top of Innsbruck

Katie Mahan is an up-and-coming American pianist based in Salzburg whose repertoire includes works by Beethoven, Gershwin and Mozart in particular. Always on the lookout for special locations for her performances, she has found an exceptional venue for her wonderful music on the Hafelekar peak. On 23 July 2022, Katie Mahan will give a summer concert at an altitude of over 2,000 metres, offering a unique concert experience on the “Top of Innsbruck”.

27th Innsbruck Promenade Concerts
2–31 July 2022 | Innsbruck/Inner Courtyard of Innsbruck’s Hofburg Palace

Once again this year, the unique Innsbruck Promenade Concerts are an absolute “must hear” during the Summer of Culture. In the ambience provided by the inner courtyard of the Imperial Palace, famous orchestras from eleven different nations will come together to inspire locals and visitors alike in a series of first-class open-air concerts. Surrounded by the charm of balmy summer evenings, the location will be transformed into a magnificent stage, thus brilliantly continuing a tradition that once prompted a storm of enthusiasm in 19th-century London, Paris and Vienna. International orchestras (military and non-military), brass wind ensembles, brass bands, big bands and symphony orchestras will all be appearing on the varied programme of the 27th Innsbruck Promenade Concerts.

46th Innsbruck Festival of Early Music

The 46th Innsbruck Festival of Early Music is sure to produce musical “encounters” that will leave their mark and ensure fond memories. As one of Europe’s most renowned festivals of Baroque music, it sees Renaissance and Baroque music take centre stage over a few weeks. Historic venues, ranging from Innsbruck’s Ambras Castle to the Hofburg, the Imperial Palace, will host over 50 events, offering listeners exceptional musical experiences of the very highest quality.

New Orleans Festival

A “Southern States” ambience in the heart of the Alps? For Markus Linder, founder of Innsbruck’s iconic New Orleans Festival, nothing could be easier: for years now, this entertainer and passionate musician has been transforming Innsbruck’s alpine-urban atmosphere for a few summer days into what feels like an open-air jazz cellar. Feet start moving, fingers click rhythmically and hips move to the beat as well-known stars from New Orleans meet local acts and swing together in a mix of rhythm’n’blues, funk, soul, blues, Dixieland, gospel and spirituals.

Tyrolean Regional Theatre Festival
22 July – 4 September 2022 | Telfs

This year’s summer of theatre will see the Tyrolean Regional Theatre Festival presenting three major productions and a supporting programme, fully dedicated to great legends and strong women both from and in Tyrol. The domed arena of the SportZentrum Telfs will be the setting for internationally renowned Tyrolean-born director Susanne Lietzow to stage her theatre spectacle “Monster & Margarete”, about Margarete of Tyrol-Gorizia, known as the “Maultasch [Bag-Mouth]”. Another strong woman on stage in Telfs, at the Kranewitterstadl, is taken from the novel “Ich bleibe hier – Resto Qui [I’m staying put]” by Marco Balzano. Artistic director Christoph Nix was able to secure the world premiere rights to this bestseller for the Tyrolean Regional Theatre Festival. Entitled “Der Träumer ist bereits frisiert – Georg Kreisler für Mutige [The dreamer has had his hair done – Georg Kreisler for the brave]”, this three-person play was the surprise success of the 2021 season and will again be performed this year.

Summer in the Giant
22 July – 21 August 2022 | Swarovski Crystal Worlds, Wattens

It’s showtime once more this summer at the Swarovski Crystal Worlds as the Circus Theatre Roncalli pitches its tents in Wattens. In keeping with the motto of the new chamber of wonders, “The Art of Performance”, the Giant is this year inviting acrobats from the Circus Theatre Roncalli into its garden, where skilfully expressive shows will thrill visitors each day from 9.00 am to 7.00 pm. Running from 22 July to 21 August 2022, this popular summer festival will once again turn the large gardens of the Swarovski Crystal Worlds into a circus ring.

Krapoldi in the Park

With a highly varied programme, ranging from street art and puppet shows to acrobatics and clowning, the Krapoldi in the Park festival offers surprises for all the family. This free event, open to everyone, transforms Innsbruck’s Rapoldi Park into a joyful festival landscape. The multi-hued events invite young and old alike to laugh, marvel, participate and unwind.

Klangspuren Festival
8–25 September 2022 | Innsbruck & Schwaz

Founded in 1993, the Klangspuren Festival stands for a musical and thematic diversity that is unique for a festival of new music. This September will see a total of 19 concerts held at various venues in Innsbruck and Schwaz. The musical spectrum of this year’s 29th edition of the festival will be extended in both stylistic and aesthetic terms through unusual artistic collaborations in the fields of jazz and pop. Visitors will once again be delighted by the Festival’s numerous premieres and first performances.
