Advent and christmas in Innsbruck
Last updated on 02.01.2019
City and mountains, tradition and innovation – in Innsbruck, like nowhere else, opposites go hand in hand to create the unique symbiosis that characterises the city. During Advent this makes the city at the “Heart of the Alps” a favourite place for those looking for a short festive break or the chance to enjoy some rather special Christmas shopping. And the new LIGHTSHOW MAX 500 is an experience not to be missed. It’s being held in one of the city’s most beautiful historical places and it invites you to embark on a sparkling journey through time. With streets decorated with Christmas lights and snow-capped mountain peaks, traditional brass band music and a sparkling crystal Christmas tree, Tyrolean tradition and modernity go hand in hand in Innsbruck. From mid-November the city sparkles with Christmas lights and, as soon as visitors young and old alike sense the delicious aromas of hot chestnuts or mulled wine in the air, they’re seized by an eager anticipation of Christmas. A unique light show & the enjoyment of alpine-urban shopping For Advent this year, Innsbruck is enriched by a new sparkling attraction. 2019 is the 500th anniversary of the death of Emperor Maximilian I, and the celebrations are being launched in November with the “LIGHTSHOW MAX 500”, an audio-visual 3D light projection. Several times a day from 20 November 2018 to 20 January 2019 in the extraordinary historic ambience of the Imperial Palace courtyard, the specially staged Mapping Show “LIGHTSHOW MAX 500” invites visitors to embark on an imaginative journey into the world of Maximilian, the “Last Knight and First Gunner”. The Innsbruck Tourist Board got inspired by another successful show, just across the border: “Solimans Dream” in Bressanone/Italy. It attracted thousands of visitors over the last three years and the new light and music show NATALIE will carry this success on and starts on the 22nd November 2018. Good news: With a LIGHTSHOW MAX500 ticket visitors get a discount at the show in Bressanone and vice versa. Innsbruck’s “Christmas in the Mountains” with six Christmas markets Visitors find Innsbruck’s “Christmas in the Mountains” a real delight. It has six enchanting Christmas markets with more than 200 stalls, and each market has its very own character. For romantics or families, high above the city or in the chic inner city, in Innsbruck everyone finds their own personal Christmas magic. Christmas Market in the Old Town (15 November to 23 December 2018) There’s a real sense of nostalgia at the city’s oldest and largest Christmas market, held under the huge Christmas tree outside the Golden Roof. There are more than 70 stalls selling arts and crafts and Christmas decorations. Children of all ages can immerse themselves in the Fairy Tale and Giants’ Alley in a world full of fantasy. And from the viewing platform you can enjoy a wonderful overview of the Old Town and the market. Christmas Market in Maria-Theresien-Strasse (25 November 2018 to 6 January 2019) The market in the Maria-Theresien-Strasse presents a very modern image and boasts an avenue of sparkling crystal trees provided by the Tyrolean world market leader in Christmas lighting. The shops stock a wide range of lovingly selected Christmas products from all over the world. Christmas Market on the Market Square (15 November to 23 December 2018) This market brings a real sparkle to the eyes of the youngest visitors. The Christmas market on the Market Square is a popular meeting place for families who love the wide range of attractions for children, such as the puppet theatre, carousel, story time and the Jaufenthal Crib. The sparkling,15-metre high Swarovski Christmas tree topped with a giant star shines out over the bustling colourful market. Panorama Christmas Market on the Hungerburg (24 November to 23 December 2018) This Christmas market is held on the Hungerburg, Innsbruck’s highest mountain. It may be small but it more than compensates with the magnificent panoramic views of the city, and another very special highlight is the 10-minute ride on the Hungerburgbahn funicular railway, straight from the city centre up to the “viewing point”. Wilten Christmas Magic (26 November to 22 December 2018) The market offers cultural diversity and regional food with an unmistakable Tyrolean twist. The delightful atmosphere of the Wiltener Platzl square with small independent shops and market stalls makes it popular with many Innsbruckers as a place to meet up after work. St. Nikolaus Christmas Market (23 November to 23 December 2018) The small market in Innsbruck’s oldest district is the “youngest” contributor to the diversity of Innsbruck’s “Christmas in the Mountains”. Atmospheric music, home-baked biscuits and a quiet, homely atmosphere give it its special character. But we’ll let you in on a closely guarded secret: Innsbruck is also a brilliant place for buying those special Christmas gifts for people who are very dear to you. For example, take a pleasant stroll through the Old Town or along Maria-Theresien-Strasse and Meraner Strasse. Both streets are festively lit and you’ll find stylish winter sportswear as well as the must-haves by current designers. You’ll also come across small arts and crafts shops and interesting, typical Tyrolean inns, on Wiltener Platzl or in St. Nikolaus, for example, or outside the “Advent market gates”.
