Cattle drives solemnly bid farewell to summer

An annual highlight in the Stubai Valley are the cattle drives. When the cattle make their way from the alpine pastures and meadows to the barn at home, it is clear that summer is over now. But that is no reason for melancholy. Especially because the cattle drives are celebrated with numerous festivals in the villages of the Stubai Valley. The farm animals are decorated with magnificent floral decorations and large bells before their way home. Tying the jewellery takes a lot of work in advance, but the helpers put their heart and soul into it and live this tradition. This year, Neustift begins on Saturday, September 7, with the cattle drive. A week later, on Saturday, September 14, it will continue in Fulpmes and Telfes. Farmers’ markets and alpine festivals with musical entertainment provide for the physical well-being and good entertainment. On Saturday, 21 September, the farmers will finally lead the animals into the valley in the Milders district of Neustift and then celebrate at the farm festival at the Brollerhof.

Varied hiking and sports programme

When the leaves turn autumnal and the temperatures become pleasantly mild, this is the best time for hiking in the Stubai Valley. On guided hikes, visitors can immerse themselves even deeper in the beautiful mountain scenery. These take place regularly during the seven weeks of the autumn highlights and are mostly offered free of charge. Sports and nature enthusiasts can hike to Höllenrachen or the Stubai Glacier during the WildeWasser Active Week, discover the Stubai Valley together on an e-bike or take a circular hike from alpine pasture to alpine pasture. The Seven Summits Tour takes you a little higher up to the Mt. Serles, Mt. Elfer or to the peak of the “Hohe Burgstall”. The athletically ambitious could be interested in the Kalkkögel Trail, which will take place for the first time on Saturday, September 28, in Telfes. Experienced trail runners cover a marathon distance of 42 kilometres, and there is also a 16-kilometre route for beginners.

Musical highlights from the mountain to the valley

Autumn in the Stubai Valley will be musical. Numerous highlights, whether in the valley or on the mountain, make the heart of music lovers beat faster. Every week, various folk music groups play at the summit stations of the mountain railways in the Stubai Valley and accompany the picturesque view down into the valley. Every Monday from 1 pm, the Dresdner Hütte offers Stubai Glacier-delicacies to accompany the live music, and on Wednesdays from 1 pm, traditional folk music plays at the Elferbahn mountain station. At the Kreuzjoch mountain station in the Schlick 2000, you can listen to the music on Thursdays from 1 pm. Every Sunday in September and October from 12:30 pm, the alpine pastures around the Serlesbahnen invite you to the Stubai “G ́spiel and G ́sang”. Singing groups and music ensembles from all over the Alpine region let the music resound at “Klang und G ́sang” on Sundays in autumn at many huts and alpine pastures in the Stubai Valley. Conviviality and culinary delights are guaranteed. But not only on the mountain, but also in the valley below, musical entertainment is provided. Every Tuesday at 8:30 pm, the melodies of the church concerts are heard in the parish church of Neustift. At the Stubai Music Carousel on the Neustift village square, a legendary show is offered every Thursday at 8:15 pm with folk, dance and brass music, hits and rock, stars of the scene and local groups.

Feasting at the Stubai farmers’ markets

During your holiday in the Stubai Valley, culinary delights should not be neglected. The Stubai Farmers’ Market at the Neustift Music Pavilion takes place all year round. Every Friday, the farmers from the region offer their local and homemade delicacies – from hearty cheese to smoked bacon and fine distillates. Visitors can take them home with them and look forward to the best quality products from their holiday. In addition to the traditional farmers’ market, the Stubai Market will take place in the pedestrian zone of Neustift on Thursdays from 6 pm until mid-September and on Fridays from 2 pm from 20 September to 18 October. Handcrafts and self-made cosmetic products complement the culinary offer. On 6 and 13 September, the farmers’ market festival invites you to a cosy exchange between regional producers, guests and locals. Accompanied by live music, there are sweet or savoury “Kiachl” – traditional Tyrolean doughnuts – and delicious, homemade cakes.
