International Literature Meets Alpine Culture: “Sprachsalz” Once Again Turns Kufstein into a Meeting Place for Great Voices in September

Last updated on 08.07.2026 | Kufsteinerland

Kufstein – From September 11 to 13, 2026, Kufstein will become a hub for international contemporary literature. The International Tyrolean Literature Days will bring together renowned authors from Europe, Asia, and the United States. The festival not only enriches the cultural program of the fortress town but also underscores the importance of the Kufstein region as a destination for people seeking culture, inspiration, and personal encounters.

Literature opens up new perspectives—and that is exactly what Sprachsalz has stood for for more than two decades. With free admission, the festival invites visitors to experience international literature firsthand and meet authors in person. Readings, discussions, book signings, and events for children foster encounters between writers and the public, transforming Kufstein into a hub of literary exchange for a weekend.

The program centers on South Korean Nobel Prize in Literature laureate Han Kang, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2024. With her poetic yet powerful prose on memory, historical traumas, and the fragility of human life, she is one of the defining voices of contemporary international literature. Her appearance at Sprachsalz is exclusive to Austria and southern Germany.

In addition, the festival brings together other prominent authors from diverse literary traditions. Expected guests include Fernando Aramburu (Spain/Germany), whose novel Patria ranks among the most important European novels of recent years; the multi-award-winning writer and translator Ralph Dutli (Switzerland/Germany); the Tyrolean author Regina Hilber, the German writer Martin Piekar, and the American storyteller Nell Zink, whose latest novel Sister Europe reached number one on the SWR bestseller list in 2025. Additional names on the festival program will be announced in mid-August.

The events will take place at the Kultur Quartier Kufstein, the Vitus & Urban wine bar, the KUBI Library, and the dia:log Gallery. The program is rounded out by the traditional Sprachsalz evening, as well as readings and a book workshop for children.

Cultural events like Sprachsalz shape the profile of the Kufsteinerland region far beyond its borders. They combine international perspectives with regional hospitality and create reasons to travel for a culturally curious audience seeking authentic experiences. It is precisely this combination of literature, a historic city, alpine scenery, and personal encounters that makes Kufstein a special place for cultural discoveries.

Georg Hörhager, Chairman of the Kufsteinerland Tourism Association: “Sprachsalz exemplifies the cultural diversity of the Kufsteinerland and fosters encounters that enrich both guests and locals alike—it is precisely this combination of international culture, inspiring places, and genuine hospitality that makes our region a special destination.”
