Ischgl crowns their superstars
Last updated on 17.01.2020
Superstars close at hand – right now at the Ischgl ski resort. Based on the motto of ‘25 Years – Top of the Mountain Concerts’, international artists created famous musicians such as Pink, Tina Turner and Bon Jovi from the snow as part of the 27th snow sculpture competition ‘Shapes in White’. First place went to the team Ivan Holzknecht and Armin Rifesser from Italy with the sculpture ‘guitar + saxophone‘.
Many international music stars all in one go? If you don’t believe it’s possible, take a look along the edge of the pistes in the Silvretta Arena. As part of the 27th snow sculpture competition ‘Shapes in White’, 10 pairs of artists from 4 countries transformed the Ischgl ski resort into an impressive open-air gallery of snow and ice from 13 to 17 January 2020. Based on the motto of ‘25 Years – Top of the Mountain Concerts’, 11 snow sculptures of up to 10m high reflect the most legendary Ischgl concerts of the last 25 years.
Music is the winner
Helene Fischer, Bon Jovi, Pink and Elton John are all on show. And first and foremost the sculpture ‘guitar + saxophone‘ which was created by sculptors Ivan Holzknecht and Armin Rifesser from Italy. The sculpture impressed the jury the most and secured first place. The team Ivo Piazza and Reiner Kasslatter from Italy came in second place with superstar ‘Tina Turner‘. In third place were Ralf Rosa and Peter Fechtig from Germany with ‘Deep Purple’. “As every year, we are very impressed with the creative performance and masterful implementation of the participants,” says Andreas Steibl from the Ischgl jury. “This year, the artists took it one step further again and made it a very tricky decision for us.”
‘Shapes in White’ – the idea behind the art project
The question of what do we do with all this snow gave rise to the art project ‘Shapes in White’ 27 years ago in Ischgl. Since then, sculptors from all over the world now submit designs to the jury of Ischgl’s snow sculpture competition each year who then select the best ideas and invite 10 pairs of artists to bring them to life in the Silvretta Arena. The sculptors have 5 days to create snow sculptures of up to 10m high in the ski resort with its 239 km of pistes. Each year there is a new motto which is announced in advance. Thanks to its location right by the pistes, primarily over 2,000m above sea level, the sculptures can be enjoyed by winter sports fans for longer.
