WMTRC 2023 present precious metals for future World Champions

With only a few days to go before the official start of the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships Innsbruck-Stubai on June 6, there are only a few final minor adjustments to be made. The medals, however, are already waiting to be ceremonially presented to the winners in a few days’ time. And just hours to go before the official start, a show race will take place in the old town of Innsbruck from 1 PM to 3 PM on June 6.
Around 1,300 participants will be welcomed at the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships (WMTRC), taking place from June 6 to 10 in Innsbruck-Stubai in Tyrol, with World Championship titles waiting to be awarded in four different categories. The first title race is the Vertical, held in Stubai on June 7. The Mountain Classic will be staged in Innsbruck on June 10, with the trail running competitions – the Trail Short, which leads from Innsbruck to the Stubai leisure center and the Trail Long taking off in Stubai and finishing outside the Landestheater in the center of Innsbruck – being held on June 8 and 9. In addition to these, there will be team contests in each category both for women and men, with the ratings being based on a nation’s three fastest runners.
The WMTRC medals
The medal design is based on two recurring visual elements: The contour lines taken from a topographic map of Stubai, and the streets of Innsbruck. “They are both literally and figuratively two sides of the same coin, and they perfectly illustrate the duality of the host regions’ urban and alpine environments. This is why we hope that the winners of those medals will look at them in a few years’ time and immediately remember the wonderful time they had in Innsbruck and Stubai. The medals are made to remind them of the precious and unique moment of crossing the finishing line – a moment that is theirs alone and that is captured in their medals forever,” explains Johannes Kohtz, WMTRC Creative Director.
Trail Feeling in the city
Under the motto “more show than race”, four women and four men will complete several rounds on the City Trail, which has been put up outside the Golden Roof in Innsbruck’s old town, between 1 and 3 PM on June 4. “With this run we want to give a preview of what is to be expected during the WMTRC. We are going to bring the trail feeling into the city, thus creating a distinctive atmosphere that we are hoping to maintain until the grand finale on June 10,” as WMTRC organizer Alexander Pittl puts it.
Two out of the four official WMTRC races have the City Trail incorporated in their course, with the Trail Short on June 8 seeing the athletes passing the trail in the old town right after the 9 AM start, guaranteeing spectators a prime location. The Mountain Classic on June 10, which will see the elite athletes complete two rounds, has the City Trail as a central element but it pays off to come by on any given day and time during the WMTRC as it will be integrated into the programs of numerous exhibitors and WMTRC partners.

The World Mountain and Trail Running Championships 2023 will be held in Innsbruck-Stubai from June 6 to 10 with an expected number of approximately 1,300 participants from 70 nations.
