World-Class Sport in Tirol: Top Events in Winter 2022/23

Winter in Tirol attracts not only holidaymakers from around the globe but also some of the world’s best sportsmen and sportswomen to compete in the Heart of the Alps. Skiing, ski jumping and cross-country skiing are just some of the many sports where the international elite gathers in Tirol to battle it out for points, prestige and prize money. Here are some of the top sporting to look forward to in winter 2022/23.

Audi FIS Ski World Cup Opening, Sölden 22.-23.10.2022
The FIS Ski World Cup Opening in Sölden traditionally marks the start of the international ski-racing season and draws world’s best ski racers to Tirol each year in late October. The weekend begins with the women’s giant slalom on Saturday, followed by the men’s giant slalom on Sunday. Tickets for this season opener on the glacier are on sale from September.

FIS Freeski World Cup, Stubai 18.-19.11.2022
The FIS Freeski World Cup will return to the Stubai Glacier once again this year with 100 athletes from 20 countries showcasing their most spectacular flips and tricks in a bid to win the hearts of the judges. Among the competitors at the Stubai Zoo snowpark are a number of Olympic champions. The event, which is taking place on the Stubai Glacier for the sixth time, is the first stop of the FIS Freeski World Cup 2022/23

FIL Luge World Cup, Innsbruck Igls 02.-04.12.2022
The village of Igls just outside Innsbruck will once again welcome the world’s best lugers in December for races in the disciplines individual, double and sprint. With its 14 banked corners and 360-degree spiral this course measuring 1,270 metres in length demands skill and concentration. The event in Innsbruck traditionally marks the start of the FIL Luge World Cup season.

BMW IBU Biathlon World Cup, Hochfilzen 07.-11.12.2022
The Biathlon World Cup in Hochfilzen is one of the biggest sports events in the Pillerseetal Valley und a firm favourite among fans and athletes alike. Each December it draws the top men and women in this traditional alpine sport combining shooting and skiing to what is one of the quieter and more remote corners of Tirol. As well as competitions in the disciplines Mass Start, Sprint and Relay there are also lots of side events going on throughout the weekend.

Four Hills Tournament, Innsbruck 03.-04.01.2023
The Four Hills Tournament is a ski jumping event held in late December and early January at four locations in Austria and Germany. The New Year’s competition is traditionally held on the Bergisel ski jump in Innsbruck, which in 2023 will welcome the world’s best for the 71st time. From the top of the 134-metre-long run-in the jumpers can see not only the huge stadium below filled with fans but also the city of Innsbruck itself framed by the Nordkette Mountains.

Audi FIS Women’s Ski World Cup, St. Anton am Arlberg 14.-15.01.2023
In January the famous winter sports resort of St. Anton am Arlberg will invite the world’s fastest female ski racers to do battle at one of the toughest races of the season on the Karl Schranz Piste. They will compete in the discipline Super-G and be cheered on by thousands of fans lining the course of this famous event also known as the Kandahar Race.

83rd International Hahnenkamm Race, Kitzbühel 16.-22.01.2023 
The downhill race in Kitzbühel on the fearsome Hahnenkamm mountain is without a doubt one of the annual highlights of the international ski-racing season. Each year it attracts the world’s best and bravest skiers keen to tame the Streif course which has seen so many great moments but also spectacular spills over the years. Saturday’s downhill is the main highlight, but there is also a prestigious slalom on Sunday.

FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships, St. Anton am Arlberg 16.-25.01.2023
Under the slogan “(Y)our next generation” the FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships 2023 (#JWSC23) will take place for the first time in St. Anton and the Tirol region only a few days after the FIS Women’s World Cup. Over 500 of the world’s best young athletes up til the age of 21 from more than 80 countries will face their first big challenge on the world cup slopes.

Freeride World Tour, Fieberbrunn March 2023
Action and adrenaline, thrills and spills are guaranteed at the Freeride World Tour, which is set to take place this season in the week beginning 11 March 2023. The steep and rocky face of the Wildseeloder mountain represents a huge canvas on which the skiers can create their own work of art. Before they can drop in, however, they have to earn their turns – the walk up to the start house at the top of the mountain takes around 40 minutes. At the summit, 2,118 metres above sea level, they can look forward to gradients of up to 70 degrees and 620 vertical metres of high-speed descending all the way down to the finish line at the bottom of the mountain. Make sure you take a pair of binoculars to follow the action up close. The exact date and details of the event will be provided nearer the time.
