The “Schlickeralmlauf” – three decades in the Stubai Valley

The 30-year anniversary of the world-famous mountain running race will be celebrated from 28 to 29 July 2018 in the traditional setting of Telfes in the Stubai Valley.
For 30 years now, the Schlickeralm mountain running race in Telfes in the Stubai Valley has proved each and every year that it can attract mountain runners from all over the world, including a number of the scene’s top stars. The run has constantly evolved, establishing new formats and making a name for itself holding major international events. Even with the thirtieth run, which takes place from 28 to 29 July 2018 in Telfes, milestones are once again being set with a new route and the staging of the Austrian Mountain Running Competition.
From then…
When the first professionally organised mountain run – the “Pfarrachalmlauf” – was held in 1988 in the Stubai Valley, no-one could have imagined that this event would take off in the way that it did. That same year, Telfes was awarded the contract to hold the World Championships in 1990 (at the time it was still called the World Mountain Running Cup or World Cup). The route was subsequently laid on the Sennjoch in the Schlick 2000 hiking centre and, with just some minor modifications, remained so until 2013. Since the dress rehearsal for the Masters World Championships (2014); the finishing line has been at Kreuzjoch, the “Schlickeralmlauf” is thus 11.5 kilometres long and is peppered with altitudes of 1,100 metres.
…until now
30 years later, after two World Mountain Running Championships (1990 and 1996), one Masters Championship (2014) and one European Championship (2009) in mountain running, the route is still setting standards. In 2018, the Austrian mountain running champions will thus be crowned here in 2018.
The start of the short route to the Kreuzjochbahn middle station will be laid this year and so runners will have to run right up also to the top, to the mountain station at 2,136 metres. That means that the length – 7.5 kilometres – remains the same but with 786 metres in altitude, there are over a hundred metres in altitude more to tackle than in previous years.
The popular competitions on the day before the race will go ahead as usual. On 28 July, the ASVÖ kids’ run for young, up-and-coming athletes, the “Zipfer Benefizlauf” and the “Telfer Wiesen Run”, which everyone can get involved in, will again be held in the sun-drenched village in the Stubai Valley.
Telfer Wiesen Run
The Telfer Wiesen Run, a folks run with street, cross-country and mountain running elements, leads runners through the beautiful landscape around Telfes. Eight kilometres long, the route runs right through glorious larch forests of the local recreation area of the Telfer Wiesen. A beautiful route that is short enough for any hobby runner to tackle quite easily.
ASVÖ kids’ run and Zipfer Benefizlauf
At the ASVÖ kids’ run, fun is the name of the game. It starts at Dorfplatz in Telfes and the finishes at the village pavillion in Telfes. The run is 300 to 2,400 metres long. Each child receives a fantastic souvenir and there is a prize for the three quickest runners per class. The “Zipfer Benefizlauf”, which everyone can get involved in, takes place after that. For each round that is run, the beer brand donates three euros, which goes towards charitable causes in the Stubai Valley. From 6.30pm, a party will be held at the “Recheis Nudelfest” with musical entertainment.
Registration and Prices
Registration for the “Schlickeralmlauf” and the “Telfer Wiesen Run” can be done online up until Friday, 27 July 2018 at www.stubai.at/schlickeralmlauf/. Late entries are accepted on race day up until 9.00am in the race office. The starter pack includes a timekeeping chip, luggage transport, food and the descent ride on the Kreuzjochbahn in Schlick 2000. In addition to prizes for the three quickest runners per class and discipline, a raffle will be drawn from among all the participants with attractive prizes. The top prize is a two-day wellness holiday for two people in the Mildererhof Hotel in Neustift.
